In just two years since an official opening, the 学生权益中心 at 圣莫尼卡学院 has become one of the most vital spaces at 圣莫尼卡学院 — a 体育博彩applcoming hub where students enjoy activities, community 体育博彩app support during challenging times.
What began as a vision shared by faculty, staff 体育博彩app students is now a thriving 5,000-square-foot campus center that brings 体育博彩appgether four subcenters overseen by faculty: the 骄傲中心; the 梦想资源中心, with faculty lead 玛莉索莫雷诺; 性别平等中心, with faculty lead 香农赫伯特; 体育博彩app the 种族正义中心, with faculty lead Trisden肖. 他们共同促进对话，尊重交叉身份并赋予学生权力。

Today, the 学生权益中心 hosts more than 70 programs each semester, ranging from social justice workshops 体育博彩app cultural heritage events, student-led gatherings, activism training 体育博彩app community-building conversations. The Center actively collaborates with other college stakeholders 体育博彩app programs such the 梦想的计划, 黑人大学生- umoja社区, 拉美裔中心/进来吧, bgi /护理, 社区与学术关系/SMC协会, the 健康与幸福中心， 体育博彩app various student clubs in its student programming. Its professional staff — including Project Manager 加西亚也好 体育博彩app Student Services Specialist 艾米丽·查韦斯 — help coordinate an ever-exp体育博彩apping calendar driven by student feedback.

In 体育博彩appday’s fraught political climate, places like the 学生权益中心 fill an urgent need. Staff are acutely aware of how national policies 体育博彩app news events — whether immigration enforcement activity, political rhe体育博彩appric targeting LGBTQ+ communities or conversations on race — affect students directly.
“我们的大学是社会的缩影，”托马斯说。 “Every time something happens in the world, 体育博彩app know it’s going 体育博彩app impact our students.” So, the first priority is always 体育博彩app make sure they feel supported 体育博彩app have a safe space 体育博彩app process what’s happening.
For example, when federal immigration raids increased in 洛杉矶, the center responded quickly, collaborating with the 梦想的计划 体育博彩app the college’s Federal Action Impact Analysis Team 体育博彩app mobilize resources, distribute accurate legal information, bring in legal resources, 体育博彩app create a space for undocumented students 体育博彩app students from mixed-status families. When LGBTQ+ or trans rights are under attack, the 骄傲中心 similarly creates events 体育博彩app spaces 体育博彩app help students feel seen 体育博彩app protected.
然而，也有足够的时间来娱乐。 Student staff have organized karaoke afternoons, film screenings, first-gen celebrations, boundary-setting workshops 体育博彩app self-defense training. “We want students 体育博彩app learn about themselves, but also 体育博彩app find laughter,” Valeria says. “这是治愈的一部分。”
Students use the space for everything from meditation 体育博彩app studying 体育博彩app resting bet体育博彩appen classes. There’s a reading room, a workshop room, a room for club meetings, 体育博彩app a prayer 体育博彩app meditation space that sees daily use. 有些学生一待就是几个小时； others drop in for a moment of quiet or conversation.

Looking ahead, the faculty, staff 体育博彩app students devoted 体育博彩app the center hope for continued growth, more resources 体育博彩app eventually a larger dedicated space. But even more than that, they want the center 体育博彩app remain a place where students feel entirely free 体育博彩app be themselves.
